Section 232
Section 232 steel & aluminum tariffs, explained
Section 232 adds a national-security tariff to covered steel and aluminum articles — and, since 2025, a growing list of derivative products. Rates and scope changed repeatedly, so the verified-on date matters as much as the number.
This is an informational estimate, not a customs ruling. Tariffs change frequently — confirm the live rate on the official USITC HTS and read our methodology & disclaimer. For a binding classification, consult a licensed customs broker or request a CBP ruling.

What Section 232 covers
Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act lets the President impose tariffs on imports deemed a national-security risk. Steel (chapters 72–73) and aluminum (chapter 76) have carried 232 duties since 2018. The base steel rate has been 25%; aluminum began at 10% and was raised in 2025.
The hard part in 2025–26 is derivatives — finished goods that contain covered steel or aluminum (fasteners, furniture frames, auto parts). Whether a specific line is in scope, and at what rate, changes by proclamation. PortRobin shows the rate we verified and the date, and flags the most volatile lines (aluminum) as needing confirmation.
